Target Trends, Vol. 4: Five Layered Looks

The art of layering is actually quite simple — if you have the right closet components. And from November to April (a harsh reality here on the East Coast), it’s all about your outerwear.

The hardest part about dressing for the brisk months ahead is keeping your style fresh all season long. As a result, I’m sharing a few of my favorite layered looks from the past few months — and how to get each look (exclusively from Target).

Think of it as a guide to arming yourself against winter’s chill. A stylish battle you’re sure to win — obviously.

A faux fur vest is an ideal layering piece over just about anything. Proportions can make or break your ensemble, so go with a piece that’s appropriate for your height and body type (I usually stick with one that hits at the hip).

textured blazer is the ultimate subtle-meets-statement-making  jacket. One with faux leather-sleeves will be your BFF  for both work and weekends, as it lends an edge to your more sophisticated (or casual) silhouettes.

When the air turns crisp, my suede jacket comes into heavy rotation. Colored coats not only brighten up your ensemble during the winter-weather months, but they can completely modernize a winter outfit when styled correctly.

Some days, we can get by on blazers and faux fur separates, but when it starts to snow, you’ve gotta break out the big guns. A tailored winter coat is classic, timeless, and an outerwear crowd pleaser — meaning it goes with everything. Since the piece itself is a bit understated, add interest to your look with a mix of textures– like a pair of worn-in boyfriend jeans.

Hit on the season’s print-mixing trend by pairing a casual camo tee with a striped blazer. Keep the statement accessories to a minimum, though — like a neon pump or quirky pair of sunglasses.
