The Basic Black Jumpsuit

Spring’s answer to effortless style comes in the form of these one-piece wonders…

… And let me tell you, I have been wearing mine every which way as of late.

I love a good jumpsuit — like, L-O-V-E a good jumpsuit — but it hasn’t always been this way. Similarly to the drop-waist dress, this is another article of clothing I just didn’t think would ever work for my body.

While this certainly isn’t a one-size-fits-all type of trend, but the more modern, functional takes on this trend have made me a believer — and with the right fit and style, I think anyone can make a jumpsuit work.

Just like a good maxi dress, a jumpsuit is your one-and-done piece of clothing that can be dressed up or dressed down.

This stand-out style is the perfect balance of chic, clean and classic, which is a hard clothing combo to come by these days.

It strikes the perfect balance on my petite frame thanks to the tailored ankles and drawstring waistline. (Though, guys — if you’re a frequent bathroom user like I am, prepare to fully undress. It’s a small sacrifice to pay, really, but think about that when you’re buying one — a zipper-back may be cute, but it means you’ll have to bring a friend to the bathroom every time you go, and the shit’s gonna get awkward.)

If you’re not sure how to buy one or where to start, look for styles that have a tailored fit at the ankle and a bit of wiggle room throughout. Oh, and steer clear of a harem-style, low-cut crotch — rarely is that flattering.

Naturally, I had to debut mine on the very first (slightly) warm-weather occasion I could find — which, really, is any day where I’m not solely wearing my fitness gear.

Over the weekend, I wore it with canvas flats, a chambray shirt and my go-to pair of Tory Burch sunnies for an afternoon of errands.

Then, I quickly swapped in pair of blush-colored heels and a sleek black clutch to make it more of an evening-worthy affair.

… Though, let me tell you — I felt like I was cheating, because this chic-and-classic stand-out style is so damn comfortable.

All hail the basic black ensemble! You know I’m all about pajamas in public
